Want a really cool, fun and educational DIY science activity to create with your child? How about creating a robot that can dance all around, draw, paint, etc.? Can you imagine how your child's face will light up when they see that they brought to life the robot they built with their own two little hands? Not quite how to build a robot, led alone one that can actually move? That's okay, I didn't either until I heard about Kithub!

WHAT IS KITHUB?

Kithub is a company whose principles are solely based on hands-on learning and creativity for children. Kithub is for educators, kids, moms, dads, grandmas -- anyone that is curious enough -- to have that same sense of empowerment that you get from being part of a community of makers. They want to help you gain the confidence you need to design a robot, build a device to collect important environmental data, or design your own creative electronics project, and have a lot of fun while doing it.

The company was founded by two women who were very passionate about hands on STEAM and creating fun educational experiences for children. Tara is a technologist and co-founder of LA Makerspace (empowering organizations that work with undeserved kids to do Maker-style education, self-sufficiently and sustainable) & Luz is an electrical engineer and founder of DIY Girls (a program raising money for stem programming for girls. The two founders began by designing workshops specifically for children and educators. They have since facilitated hundreds of workshops to date. They ended up deciding to take it to the next level, by making it possible for parents and children to create projects from affordable kits right at the kitchen table! As you can see, these women are doing wonderful things!

I had the wonderful opportunity to work with Kithub and received a Motorized Artbot Kit to build with my three-year-old son. When I first received the kit I have to admit that I was a little nervous that wouldn't be able to put it together. Upon opening the our kit, I found the directions and was relieved to see how simple and cool it would be to build our robot. My son and I couldn't wait to see what we could create!

HOW WE BUILT OUR BOT

We started with inserting the battery into the battery holder

Then we attached both the battery holder and battery to the side of the cup with electrical tape.

Taping battery and battery holder onto red paper cup

We then wrapped a piece of tape around the motor shaft (the part that spins), so it looked like a flag.

Next, we needed to test the motor to make sure that it worked. The way we tested our motor was by connecting the motor to the battery holder by clipping the alligator clips running from the motor to the exposed metal of the battery holder (positive and negative leads).

Our motor worked great, so we disconnected the clips from the battery holders leads and taped the motor to the base of the cup. Then it was time to decorate our new robot friend!

With Christmas right around the corner, we decided to create Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer which was perfect because we had a little red LED night. I ended up using felt, 3-D puffy paint, ribbon, and tooth picks to create our reindeer. He turned out adorable!

Once we were finished decorating all we had to do to bring our robot to life was connect our alligator clips on the motor to the positive and negative leads on the battery holder.

You can even make your robot move differently depending on where you place the motor and the battery holder on the cup.

Every single part of this project was so much fun! My son and I really enjoyed working on the robot together. My son was absolutely amazed when his reindeer started hopping around the table!
